Summary/Abstract: The role of the European Court of Human Rights is to ensure that fundamental rights are respected by the signatory states of the European Convention on Human Rights. In order to carry out this task, the Court shall examine complaints lodged by individuals or States and shall give its decision. It is mandatory and must be implemented by the targeted state.
