Summary/Abstract: The article presents the prominent public figures in Pylyp Orlyk’s Diariusz podróżny [Travel diary]. Elements of war and fear can be found in the fate of Pylyp Orlyk and his family. The author presents a hermeneutical analysis of the text, emphasising the hetman’s private life, which is inextricably linked to his military affairs and difficult international diplomacy. The lost war with Peter I had a colossal effect on the life of Pylyp Orlyk and his family. The research revealed that Pylyp Orlyk wanted to liberate the areas of the Left and Right Banks from the Russian yoke, which in the eighteenth century brought unimaginable losses to the Ukrainian nation.
