Summary/Abstract: In the beginning of the 20th century infectious diseases – and mainly malaria and tuberculosis – plagued the Greek population. Greece held the first position in Europe as regards to malaria. Especially Athens, the capital of the Greek State (1830), was a small city with very high malaria morbidity. In this city, the stagnant waters of the river Ilissos were considered responsible as the main causative factor.
