Thirty years of the single market of the European Union

Summary/Abstract: 1 January 1993 marked the thirtieth anniversary of the creation of the EU's internal market. The commemoration of this successful project, which among other things inspired the creation of other integration groups around the world, is appropriate, not least because after so long we tend to take the wrong thing for granted: internal market freedoms and competition regulation have boosted economic growth and made the daily lives of European businesses and consumers easier. On the other hand, however, the internal market is not a finished project and probably will not be for some time to come, due to internal and external challenges.
