Anna Ilieva and the Documentation of Traditional Dance Culture

Summary/Abstract: The present article examines Prof. Anna Ilieva’s work viewed through the prism of the data documented in her field notebooks. The goal is to outline the personal touch in her professional pursuits and interests. The study covers the period in which she worked at the Music Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1958 – 1988). To achieve this objective, all of Anna Ilieva’s field notebooks have been thoroughly reviewed, structural analysis of the contained data has been conducted, and their typology has been extracted. The study places an emphasis on the cited and retold accounts of the informant(s), in other words, of what impressed and/or intrigued Ilieva beyond the context established by the fieldwork practices of music folklorists of that time.
