Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to critically assess the maturity of entrepreneurship education as a self-standing research area, considering its history and research gaps, and to identify research trends that are likely to intensify its further development. The article presents a brief historical overview of entrepreneurship education, highlighting its particularities as a research area, including the dynamics of development over the years, followed by an evaluation of its greatest weaknesses and the challenges it faces. Concluding with an analysis of research trends, the article reflects on the maturity of this research area. It shows that despite the existence of a critical perspective, entrepreneurship education is one of the most rapidly growing and promising areas using entrepreneurship scientific output. However, despite over four decades of knowledge advancement in entrepreneurship education and its core learning processes, there remains a need to conduct more comprehensive research to better understand what to teach, how to teach, whom to teach, and for what purpose.
