Summary/Abstract: The reviewed book, as one of the first of its kind to be written in Czech, addresses the topic of academic freedom in relative detail at the theoretical level. The author demonstrates that academic freedom is a professional privilege and is strongly connected to its performance and must not be confused with freedom ofspeech or intellectual freedom. The author further points out that both the definition of academic freedom and the justification thereof depend on the definition of the function of academia in society, concerning which the author subsequently distinguishes between the epistemic and social approaches. The final part of thepublication defines and presents the author's own concept regarding these approaches, the so-called professionalised concept of academic freedom. The book provides a clear explanation of the basic terms and concepts that are used in current discussions on academic freedom, so as to provide the reader with an initial introduction to the respective issue. However, the practical, applicable role of the book is diminished bythe fact that it does not address the legal aspects of the issue. On the other hand, it is important to note that the author includes the presentation of his own, very well considered, theory of academic freedom.
