Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on developments in energy and climate policies over the past year, which has been defined by Russia's war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and rising inflation. The first part of the article addresses the question of energy poverty and potential structural solutions to this issue. The second part reflects upon the positive and negative consequences of the energy crisis. The author considers the record development of renewable energy sources in Europe as a positive effect, which has helped to compensate for extremely expensive natural gas and to limit European dependence on Russian energy sources. Conversely, the author considers the record increase in subsidies for fossil fuel companies to be a negative effect. Government compensation packages, price caps and consumer protection measures have artificially made fossil fuels more competitive and provided energy companies with extraordinary profits, while the cost of living for households has risen substantially. After having overcome the acute phase of the energy crisis, it is now necessary to focus on systemic solutions that both lead to greater social cohesion and act to support the principles of social solidarity. Climate policies, such as those set out in the Fit for 55 package, will form one of the bases on which to build such solutions.
