Summary/Abstract: The article provides a summary of current developments regarding the Green Agreement for Europe, with an emphasis on those sections of the document that will most affect the socio-economic sphere. The text argues that the Green Agreement for Europe has the potential to bring about a socially just transformation to a low-carbon economy; however, the EU must begin to adhere to the “polluter pays“ principle and stop providing free permits to large industries. The recently proposed charge for carbon emissions in the transport and construction sectors thus has the potential to be a socially progressive tool, but only if the proceeds are redistributed, especially among the most vulnerable groups of the population. However, decisions on the use of such revenues will be made by the various Member States, which should not underestimate this aspect of the green transformation process.
