Summary/Abstract: Student teachers of German as a foreign language face numerous challenges when planning and implementing their initial teaching practice. One of these challenges is the effective instruction of new vocabulary to ensure learners' comprehension, retention, and eventual application of unfamiliar lexical items. This study examines how prospective teachers explicitly and implicitly teach new vocabulary. The analysis comprises 16 video-recorded lessons conducted during microteaching sessions at the university, and 16 students' lesson plans. The findings highlight the imperative for increased emphasis on implicit and explicit vocabulary teaching methods in the training of student teachers, as the development of learners' lexical competence remains significantly overlooked and solely entrusted to them.
