Summary/Abstract: The First World War led to the disappearance of the great European empires, the triumph of democracy, but also of nationalism. It has changed the political map of Europe, by the emergence of new states, in accordance with the principle of national self-determination. But these states that wanted to be national had an accentuated multi-ethnic component, which generated instability.
