Summary/Abstract: Jewish Drama, Theatre and Identity, published in 2019, is an expanded and revised version of the habilitation thesis the author defended a year earlier. Szilvia Peremiczky’s research focuses not only on the theatre-historical context but also on the identity figures in dramatic texts, i.e. it aims to showcase works in which different Jewish identities are represented. In the three sections of the volume (Religious and Theatre History, Jewish Theatre in the Diaspora, and The Theatre of National Integration), the reader gains an insight into the history of Jewish theatre on the one hand, and on the other, mainly in the second part of the volume, into the forms of Jewish drama. The value of the volume is indisputable, and the reading of theatre history from a Judaic perspective is highly exciting. According to the author’s methodological principles, a holistic approach prevails in the writings of the volume. Following the author’s concept, the essays balance between theatre history (possibly drama history) and Judaic studies.
