Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyse the symbolism of the road taken by two of the main characters in Sadoveanu's novel The Hatchet, Vitoria and Gheorghiță, the wife and the son of a man that disappeared months before they decide to start a journey in order to find him. The road taken by them is a hard one, not just because they travel in not very good conditions, but also because it ends with the news that their beloved husband and father is dead, so this aspect changes their lives.
