Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to interpret and analyze the beginning poems of Ion Barbu, a Romanian poet, based on the Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy. Ion Barbu wants a connection between Thinking and Poetry, between Ideas and Life. It does not alternate the two possibilities, but wishes them in perfect union. Each of them has, on a textual level, incarnations. The Idea has as symbols: the ice, the diamond, the crystal, the North, the precious stones and Life has its motives: the heat, the liquid sky, the solarity, the cloudless kingdom, the laughter, the fertility, the sound, the color, the vibration. Thinking is found in static images and has its antinomy in dynamic images, loaded with heat and fertility. The material qualities are prevalent in the poetry of Ion Barbu. The poetry of matter brings together ice, water, fire, light, lymph, tree, lava etc. The primary hypostases of elementary materials: water, air, fire, earth appear along with the secondary hypostases: banquises, pole, river, fountain and vegetable. The process of mirroring, the symbol of silver, the warrior hypostasis are particularly interesting in Ion Barbu`s poems.
