Music as an effective tool to support language learning

Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the role of music as an effective tool in developing language skills. Its main aim is to present the benefits of using music in the language learning process. Following a brief introduction - an outline of the origins of the use of music for educational purposes - it discusses how the use of song in the classroom influences the development of vocabulary, listening comprehension skills, phonetic and cultural aspects as well as the learner’s autonomy. The article also includes a description of the potential dangers of selecting popular material in language acquisition and practical ideas for teachers’ use of song. How (not) to select songs for the target group and create a lesson with musical material to make it interesting, engaging and promote correct linguistic patterns and development?
