Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to describe aspects of social implication of language system and usage in the process of language acquisition. The author has observed that students tend to translate whole phrases when learning a foreign language. In the case of proverbs this can be an obstacle due to false friends in the lexical and syntactical constellation and of their context. Based on linguistic description of interference and equivalence the paper offers a contrastive view on German and Romanian proverbs giving also some exercise suggestions for learners.
