Summary/Abstract: The article presents argumentation supporting a thesis that characteristic features of the 1593 translation of the New Testament – lack of literalism and a strive for comprehensibility – is an effect of Jakub Wujek’s collaboration with Justus Rabb: members of a censors’ committee that revised the version of the New Testament from 1590 to 1592. After describing the methods (“Genetics of a translation”) in the section “Minor Catholic Postil from 1590” based on an analysis of subsequent Postil’s editions, the author argues that Evangelical pericopes from an issue of 1590 are a textual witness of Wujek’s translation, a one that the Jesuit censorship had not yet verified. Examples of modifications, which had been introduced to the New Testament of 1593 and reflected a departure from literalism towards a less literal translation, are presented in the section “Differences between Minor Catholic Postil of 1590 and New Testament of 1593”. An analysis of the archival material presented in the last section of the article (First censorship of the ‘Wujek’s Bible’) reveals that the discussed departure from literalism – a principle of translating the Evangelical pericopes – is an effect of Warszewicki’s and Rabb’s engagement in the edition censorship of the translation.
