Summary/Abstract: One of the most remarkable fighters for the right of self-determination of the Romanian people in Transylvania, according to the principles stated by US President Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921), was Vasile Lucaciu (1852-1922) priest from Maramures. He co-authored several memoirs about the national rights of the Romanians in the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the period preceding the First World War, as well as the bearer of these memoirs and messages to the Emperor of Vienna, the Pope of Rome and the United States of America . He has been an intransigent struggle for his nation's rights for more than thirty years. If these things are well known, it is less known that priest Vasile Lucaciu had to fight not only with the Austro-Hungarian authorities, but also with his superiors in the Greek Catholic Church, especially with his bishop Ioan Szabo, which under these circumstances was on the side of the Hungarian government in Budapest and against the political interests of the Romanians in Transylvania.
