Summary/Abstract: The present paper analyzes from a new point of view a known part of the First speech of the public speaker Lysias. The main idea is to present the behaviour of three women inhabitants of ancient Athens – behaviour that throws light on the daily round of the city. Special attention is paid to cases of breaking legal regulations: marital fidelity is violated by an Athenian wife, the customary period of mourning is not observed, another Athenian woman also is unfaithful to her husband and slanders, and an “obedient” woman slave betrays her mistress. The text illustrates aspects of the mentality of a person from antiquity.
