Summary/Abstract: Towards the end of the 19th century Sibiu became an important art center, as visual artists tried to synchronize their work with the modern tendencies from Central Europe. The first step in this direction was the school-reform from the end of the 19th century, which put the accent in a higher degree on drawing classes. In 1871, Carl Dörschlag, who came from Germany became professor for fine arts at the Brukenthal College in Sibiu. He had a group of gifted pupils as Hermine Hufnagel, Anna Dörschlag, Michael Fleischer, Robert Wellmann, Arthur Coulin, Octavian Smighelschi, whom he convinced to study at Art Academies in order to become professional artists. These youngsters had to play an important role in the advent of modern local art, being known in art history as the Dörschlag Circle. The First World War and the tragic destiny of some of the circle’s members diminished the importance of Sibiu as an art center.
