Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the forms and effects of financial investors’ activity on commodity markets. These investors consider future contracts as a form (category) of financial assets. Particular emphasis has been placed on exploring the impact of investor activity on commodity price movements. Both the results of the author’s research and the most recent studies addressing these issues indicate clearly that – under the current (high) degree of financialisation of the economy – price movements are strongly correlated with the extent of financial investor involvement and not with the fundamentals of commodity markets (demand and supply). The changes in financial investors’ engagement on commodity markets are, in turn, determined mostly by the situation on the global financial market.
