Summary/Abstract: The European Union policy towards the countries of the South Caucasus region is an example of lack of a long-term concept towards the countries of the post-Soviet area. The EU has not developed any long-term comprehensive strategy towards the South Caucasus countries, so far. The objectives and assumptions of the European Neighbourhood Policy and the Eastern Partnership have not been prepared for the global economic crisis. The previous European support in the framework of the Eastern Partnership is based mainly on sectoral assistance (functional not institutional integration). While the EU offers promises and not clear perspectives for the countries of the eastern neighbourhood, Russia proposes considerable benefits. Within the financial crisis period it gained an investment domination in energetic sector and infrastructure.
