Summary/Abstract: The phenomenon of the existence of a human being interested and occupied the attention of thinkers in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, gaining its explication in the contexts of mythological and theological knowledge. It was only at the end of the 19th century that E. Durkheim pointed to its social aspect, formulating thesis about the duality of human nature (homo duplex). In the 20th century, both sociology and social psychology constructed numerous theories describing this phenomenon in subject-object categories resulting in the development of the interdisciplinary social theory of the human being gaining in the process of its socialization a differently defined feature, yet enabling the social existence of an individual exposed and thus perceived socially intersubjectively. In the article devoted to social competence, the author refers to this trend of concepts showing this phenomenon, in which he sees an individual’s chance for social existence in the social structure, in the initial, childhood phase of constituting his social biography after fulfilling the conditions indicated in it.
