Summary/Abstract: The memory of the Second World War and Slovak rule in Spisz and Orawa remains quite vivid in both regions. Comparing contemporary accounts with memories collected in the years 1967–1970, it can be argued that there have not been any major changes. The image of the five years of war is mainly coloured by the good economic situation and the turn towards Slovakness, not seen pejoratively. The accounts of witnesses from half a century ago complement the contemporary testimonies, although obviously containing more details and carrying a greater emotional charge.
