Summary/Abstract: During the last decade, we have witnessed the increasingly present discourse which proposes the equal right to education. The loudest voices which promote that discourse are the proponents of deinstitutionalization of children with disabilities, and of strengthened support in formal education, as manifested by more inclusive classrooms. Given that there is a small number of persons with disabilities included in the higher education process, which is caused by external factors – architectural barriers, the lack of assistive technology and adapted books for students with disabilities, the university staff which is not educated to work with students with disabilities and finally, inadequate laws and by-laws which prescribe the rights of persons with disabilities in higher education, the need for a more inclusive culture in higher education institutions arose. In this paper, we will present the most dominant theories regarding the inclusive education and analyze the current state of affairs, in terms of the practical implementation of the strategies and laws relevant for this area. A special attention will be dedicated to the University’s response to this challenge, through the establishment of the Student Support Office. One of the foci of the Office is to ensure and promote the inclusive culture, aiming to systematically educate the academic staff and promote social solidarity within the community.
