Summary/Abstract: This study concerns the influence of Hesychasm in Byzantine iconography, in particular presenting some of the characteristics of the Cretan school of painting, in relation to those of the Macedonian school. The teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas, related to the veneration of the Mother of God in the tradition of the Orthodox Church will be highlighted, with an emphasis on the analysis of an icon of the Mother of God with the Child painted by Theophanes the Cretan in the 16th century.
