Summary/Abstract: In this paper the content of the concept “language culture” is pondered upon. The important elements of the language culture are defined on the basis of the papers which deal with this concept as well as on the basis of a questionnaire which has been carried out among students who, upon the completion of their studies, will be in direct contact with the institutionalized learning of the standard language at all educational levels and who will teach language culture. So far authors have emphasised different elements of the language culture as relevant. However, without defining it precisely and getting to the bottom of its nature, it cannot be expected that language culture will be acquired and applied. In other words, one cannot expect that the importance of language culture will be recognized in private and public communication. It is certain that every culture is based on some norms and that those norms oblige and limit spontaneous possibilities. With its systematic norms, culture does not introduce restriction, but order, sense, shape, discipline, comprehensiveness. The more we synchronise our activity with the norms it encompasses, the more we belong to that culture and take part in it.
