This research will establish the following: 1. how pupils and students understand the meaning of the concept ‘standard language’ and its role as a general means of communication 2. to what degree the following factors have influence on positive/negative attitudes towards the standard language: the regional (local) vernacular of the subject (their immanent grammar), their level of education and elementary and high school success in the subject Croatian language. The assumption is that those subjects whose regional (local) vernacular is stokavian, who have spent more time on education and who were more successful in Croatian language will have a more positive attitude on the standard Croatian language.
