Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the processes of national identification during the Croatian National Revival, taking into consideration its relations with (South) Slav ethnic and cultural identity and Croatian political position in the Austrian Empire. It aims to show the possible reasons why the Croatian National Revival and Vojna krajina (Military Border), as one of its most frequent motifs, are perceived as controversial, paradoxical or as open wounds (Rapacka) in contemporary Croatian culture. In conclusion, the origin of such perceptions is found in the ambivalent functions which the Croatian National Revival and Military Border have had in the processes of real or symbolic opening and closing of national borders.
