Summary/Abstract: British historical pageants were extremely popular during the period 1905–1939. Despite the involvement of millions of British people as performers and audiences, it was not until the 1990s that they became the subject of research. The idea, organization and public perception attracted the attention of researchers. The subject of the article are selected research problems: Was the pageant an invention of Louis N. Parker? What role did these performances play in the life of the local community? Did these undertakings fi nally hold society together, or perhaps they caused social animosities? The database (The Redress of the Past: Historical Pageants in Britain) containing several hundred pageants and research perspectives resulting from its use is also discussed.
