Summary/Abstract: A series of 15 monumental paintings decorating the interior of the Franciscan Church in Zamość was created in the early 1680s. This is indicated by archival records, which suggest the conclusion that their author was Jacek Chylicki – a painter employed by the Ordinates of Zamość, who were the founders and patrons of the temple. The series was intended to correspond in theme to its Marian invocation. The church was not spared by the turmoil of history, which led almost to its ruin, and the aforementioned series of paintings dispersed over time, which makes the issue of preservation and subject matter of some of them uncertain today. With the presentday state of research, it can be concluded that 11 of the 15 paintings still exist, although the other ones may possibly be found in the future. Researchers dealing with them so far have come to the conclusion that the creator of the Zamość composition used readymade graphic patterns, which were readily used by painters at the time. The purpose of this article is to identify more drawings that the artist used to paint the scenes of: the Visitation of St Elizabeth, the Circumcision of Jesus and the Flight into Egypt, included in the series under discussion. Based on the examples cited in the text, it can be concluded that J. Chylicki did not use drawings belonging to a single collection, even if such a collection contained drawings of the relevant subject matter, but rather utilised designs from various sources. Therefore, one has to admit that, in iconographic terms, his paintings are to a large extent adaptations of compositions created by other artists.
