Summary/Abstract: Owing to the increase in the death rate inside labor colonies, the pressure of international institutions (see the Simionescu case), the death of I.V. Stalin on March 5, 1953, and the ensuing events, December 5, 1953, marked the beginning of a new activity, under government order: special commissions were to check the detainees and “counterrevolutionary” interned in penitentiaries, labor camps, and colonies. Some of the measures that were proposed: observance of the deadlines for freeing prisoners; the establishment of a standing medical commission; checking the situation of all those detained; the imprisonment in labor colonies to be based on concrete evidence; periodical analyses of the convicts’ work force, and a distribution of labor tasks according to their capacity.
