Summary/Abstract: On 20 November 1945, in heavily damaged Nürnberg, the Trial of the Major War Criminals before the International Military Tribunal (IMT) began to unfold. Still debatable, the event was both acknowledged for its great influence on the development of international criminal law, and criticised on a number of grounds. This article examines the steps taken in the establishment of the IMT, the main challenges during the negotiations and offers a brief image of the defendants who were once representing the Nazi leadership.
