On Jerzy Wiatr’s Account of His Own Life and of the Sociology in Poland under Real Socialism

Summary/Abstract: The essay is devoted to the book, in which Jerzy J. Wiatr speaks about his life and the sociology in Poland during the period of real socialism (1944–1989), responding to Paweł Kozłowski’s questions. Departing from the information that the book delivers as well as the opinions expressed therein, this essay indicates a selection of issues in the history of sociology and the sociology of science, which the book may encourage to address or which can be studied on the basis of its content. These include: the types of scholarly careers in sociology, the role of academic authoritative figures and schools, the autobiographies of sociologists, as well as the political engagement of sociology and its dilemmas.
