Summary/Abstract: Granges were an important economic resource for the Johanniter Order, producing natural goods and providing sustenance for the individual commanderies and the offices of the higher monastic dignitaries of the Brandenburg Bailiwick, which were the monastic establishments of the Brandenburg, Mecklenburg and Pomerania areas. An example is the three bailey and estate granges under the Pomeranian commandery at Swobnica; the former commandery at Kolin, whose status had oscillated between monastic seat and grange since the medieval period, was also under the authority of the commanders there in the mid-16th century. As a result of intensive use, the original Joannite buildings on these farms have not survived to the present day, but insight is provided by 16th-century inventories documenting the granges in the early modern era (primarily around the middle of the 16th century). This was when the commandery in Swobnica was subordinated to the Pomeranian Dukes, but remained part of the Protestant faction of the order which the Brandenburg Bailiwick then became. Inventory sources from this period, although scarce, when compared with other source texts, field observations and the results of archaeological research, allow us to initially outline this hitherto marginally addressed issue. This gives an opportunity to discuss the nature and function of the buildings located on the farms, and to assess to what extent the monastic affiliation influenced the shape of the buildings present there.
