Summary/Abstract: The death of Prince Marceli Lubomirski during the storming of Sandomierz in 1809 echoed loudly among the Polish political and cultural elite as an example of patriotic devotion and heroic death on the field of glory. The source information made it possible to conclude about the mentality of the time. On the example of salon rumours about Lubomirski’s connections with the secret society of the Illuminati, the author addresses the question of gossip as a historical source, its relation with reality and ideas about secret societies in the early nineteenth century. The second part of the article juxtaposes several source accounts of the circumstances of Lubomirski’s death, which provoke reflection on the psychology of battlefield at that time.
