IDENTITY AND LINGUISTIC PARATOPY

Summary/Abstract: Migration either politically conditioned or not, causes a split of identity to the individual because he experiences a double displacement: physical and spiritual, and linguistic, too. Integration/ suitability to a different culture depends on the new language learning, but "living" in another language has implications at the level of identity, as can be seen to the Romanian writers forced to choose exile during communism. The language(s) of a community refers to a common history / life experience, and not – speaking that language means for a foreigner not to be able to understand and share this cultural heritage, that is being a permanent outsider. Bilingualism (multilingualism) means the first step to become an insider, and belong to the community. This paper aims to emphasize the efforts of the Romanian writers to re-shape their linguistic identity and to surmount the outsider status.
