Summary/Abstract: Our educational attempt to teach technical English refer to developing discourse processing abilities that should be practiced with ESP students through effective seminar activities. The paper aims at emphasizing the relevant aspects of discourse processing to improve deep comprehension, empathy and understanding, critical thinking by exploring favourable learning environments and adequate pedagogical strategies. The paper investigates the structures, patterns, mental representations, and psychological processes that underlie written and spoken discourse. We have considered the discourse comprehension learning methods, such as constructing explanations, asking deep-reasoning questions, challenging the learner’s beliefs and knowledge, questioning the author, and the reciprocal teaching method. Strategies to improve in our engineering students their cognitive abilities and communication skills are discussed together with several types of learning activities we propose, which are meant to make students think critically and argue logically, an ability that employers in the global marketplace greatly value.
