Summary/Abstract: Illegal work or work "on the side" can be defined as an economic activity that is not officially recognised and which forms part of the so-called shadow economy. The shadow economy is made up of a number of areas including the performance of illegal activities and work in underdeveloped areas of the economy as well as activities aimed at evading the payment of tax. The shadow economy includes, inter alia, the so-called grey economy consisting of illegal activities performed in such a way as to avoid taxes and other wage deductions. It also contains activities that are essentially legal, but which are hidden from the authorities in order to avoid taxation and/or state regulation.
