Summary/Abstract: Over the last several decades, the majority of OECD countries have recorded increased unemployment rates despite an increase in GDP per capita. Older workers particularly tend to be more prone to losing their job positions. Moreover, older persons often face a lack of job opportunities as a result of so-called "non-productive" age discrimination following retirement. However, it has recently come to light that, in fact, the employment rate of young people correlates positively with that of older persons. The paper focuses on providing an examination of the heterogeneity of this relationship between young workers (aged 15−24) and older workers (aged 55−64) in OECD countries. The identification of similar employment patterns between these two age groups in OECD countries subsequently allowed us to differentiate the various substitution and complementary relationships that exist between countries. The comparison served not only to provide a benchmark for measuring the labour market participation of young and older people, but also to identify specific areas in which young and older persons may face barriers to labour market participation.
