Summary/Abstract: The European Community was created in the 1950s as a project focused on economic development and cooperation between western European countries. The first mention of the fight against discrimination can be found as early as in the Treaties of Rome, namely in the context of pay inequality between men and women. The Amsterdam Treaty heralded the ambition of the Community to apply its anti-discrimination agenda to the areas of employment and the labour market and gender as a protected characteristic.
