Summary/Abstract: The report defines the essence of crypto currencies by distinguishing them from the digital ones by the following criteria: application, ownership, regulation/authorization, stability rate and market access, transaction transparency, encryption and blockchain usage, transaction fee. The reason for their spread and transformation into a global phenomenon is being clarified. The report provides a presentation and comparison of popular and less well-known cryptocurrency types, along with current statistics that define bitcoin as the leading cryptocurrency worldwide. Based on the marketing capitalization index we provide an assessment and a ranking in value of the 10 best currencies – as they stand for the month of May, 2022. In conclusion we provide an overview of the disadvantages of cryptocurrency in general and bitcoin in particular.
