Summary/Abstract: In the course of the last 30 years quite a few works have been published whose authors distinguish between artistic and aesthetic values and stress the necessity of distinguishing artistic from aesthetic evaluation of a work of art. The followers of this distinction justify their position by pointing to the presence of manifest anti-aesthetic or deaesthetic tendencies in avant-garde art, particularly in painting and music. The author discusses the views of A. Danto, J. Margolis, G. Dickie, T. Binkley, G. Santayana, D. W. Prall, R. B. Perry, W. P. Tugarinow, W. Witwicki, Tatarkiewicz, J. O. Urmson, V. Tomas, F. Sibley, P. Kivy, N. Woltertorff, T. Kulka, G. Hermeren and M. C. Beardlsey. The author distinguishes five basic conceptions concerning the relationships between the artistic and the aesthetic values of art, i. e. the standard conception, the modernized standard conception, the phaenomenological conception, the avant-garde conception and the open conception.
