Summary/Abstract: In the 21st century, humanity is facing a global, pervasive and growing epidemic – drugs. The drug phenomenon reveals a market that is sustainable and reflects the processes taking place globally. Persistent health and security problems arising from traditional and new illicit drugs create a challenging environment for identifying and implementing effective responses. Illicit drug use is a recognized contributing factor to global morbidity. It is associated with both chronic and acute health problems, which are aggravated by a number of factors, including the properties of the substances taken, the mode of administration, the individual vulnerability of users and the social context in which the drugs are taken. Chronic problems include drug addiction and drug-related infectious diseases. There are also a number of acute health hazards, the best documented of which is drug overdose. The adverse health effects associated with drug use remain significant.
