Summary/Abstract: Encounters with the Alien and the Foreigner in contemporary German language literature are also portrayed in connection with the imperial(istic) past. Following a short introduction to post-imperial studies and against the backdrop of new empire studies – a research approach under the influence of historiography, social science, political science, and recently also cultural studies – the paper analyzes selected novels about the colonial period and its consequences up to the present in order to draw attention to the range of literary representations of the post-imperial situation.
