Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to trace the way in which the image of Saint Clement of Ohrid is built in the Bulgarian prose of the interwar period, assuming that this time was crucial for the establishment of the place of the saint in the Bulgarian cultural memory. The meanings related to a certain notion of educator/enlightener and patron are the subject of reflection, and the referring point is the role of medieval history as a model and the issue of secularization in the sense of the differentiation of social spheres. First, the plot line of the story is considered in the diachronic and synchronous plan, in order to pay special attention to the meeting of the saint with Tzar Simeon. The thesis is that the interpretation of this episode in the context of the socio-political situation in Bulgaria during the interwar period, but also the National Revival cultural matrix can contribute to the discussion of the specific understanding of the relationship between spiritual and secular power in the Bulgarian context.
