Summary/Abstract: The topic of this paper is the language of the Diary of Ahmed Hamdi Aliefendić from the period 1905–1930. The Diary represents some kind of testimony to the persistence of a nation and its language, which has been determined by the area in which the nation exists and the time in which it lives. The creative spirit of the folk has been shaped by the language expression that represents that kind of connection which gives evidence about the dynamic development and progress of the Bosnian language. In the paper, there will be an analysis of some language peculiarities of the Diary, the most interesting orthographical, phonetical, morphological and syntactical characteristics. The lexis will confirm the thesis about Bosnian, Turskish, Arabic, German or other languages’ elements and their diversity. The paper will also analyze writings which are used in the Diary. The usage of the Bosnian Cyrillic script and ”arebica“ is particularly interesting, so it will be transliterated. We will point out the stylistic features that are evident (Kur’an style, dating events by “hidžret years“, usage of phrases, sentences etc.). The analysis will also show that the Diary contains a lot of information about historical events in Janja and Bosnia and Herzegovina generally, as well as information about people and their living conditions throughout that period and about the language and its characteristics.
