Summary/Abstract: This study comprises a critical analysis and edition of ten charters preserved in the archive of the Vatopedi Monastery from Mount Athos. The charters, dating from the second half of the 16th century (1554-1587), originate from the archive of the Golia Monastery in Iasi, a metochion of the Vatopedi Monastery. These charters are to supplement the well-known DRH-A series of medieval Moldavian documents. The ten charters were issued by the following lords of Moldavia: Alexander Lăpușneanul (2), John the Terrible (1), Peter the Lame (6) and Iancu the Saxon (1). Only two of these charters were previously known to scholars, but only as regesta, while another two were summarized in later documents. The ten charters are referring to the Moldavian villages of Spineni, Costucani, Liești, Mihnești, Radomirești and Movileni and to the noble families of Golia, Arbure and Corpaci. The charters provide a new insight into the lives of two noblewomen that played an important role in the history of Moldavia, in the second half of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th: Ana, the wife of the great logothete Ioan Golăi, and Agafia, the servant of Alexander Lăpușneanul, unusually named “great cneaghina” as a recognition of her role.
