Summary/Abstract: In contemporary Indo-European languages, the dual is an archaism preserved only in some Slavic languages. The dual is an obligatory grammatical form of the contemporary standard Slovenian and also appears to varying degrees in most Slovenian dialects. This grammatical category is also preserved in some areas in the neighbouring countries, e.g. in Croatia (Kajkavian). This paper presents the characteristics, uses and remnants of the dual in the South Slavic languages. Since the current use of the dual in the standard Slovenian language is primarily based on a revival or reconstruction of the 16th century literary language, the use of the dual in the 16th century is compared with current use in standard Slovenian and Slovenian dialects.
