Summary/Abstract: What the appearance and the goal of the Bulgarian documentary cinema before 1989 are, and what they are after that? What changes of our cinema resulted from the huge political, economic and cultural changes that took place in Bulgaria after the memorable date of 10th November, 1989? What the difficulties, novelties and opportunities for our documentary cinema are and how the authors adapt to the new reality? Who the significant authors, titles and trends are in this period and what the topics, cinema most often looks into, are? How the conjuncture affects the appearance of cinema (in particular the documentary) and how cinema affects society? These issues are analyzed in the paper Bulgarian documentary cinema on the border between totalitarianism and democracy.
